What is Amazon Prime Day and when is it?

Amazon Prime Day is Amazon’s most major deal-based event of the year. This article discusses its origins and prepares you for the upcoming Amazon Prime Day 2023 (estimated to be in July) to help you take advantage of the wonderful deals that will be on offer.

What are Amazon Prime Days?

Amazon Prime Day (2022 and all previous years) is an annual sale across the entire Amazon website, rewarding shoppers and particularly Prime members, with superb all-around savings. The event which spreads across all Amazon regions features some ‘insane’ discounts and the most amount of special deals you’ll find, compared to the rest of the year. The deals are, in fact, so ‘insane’ that they often match or easily beat Black Friday deals!

Thousands of Amazon brands and small businesses participate and the best part is that incredible discounts are also available to non-Prime members, but not to the same level, naturally. Either way, you’d want to be an Amazon Prime member to take full advantage of Amazon Prime Days, and we’ll show you how!

When is Amazon Prime Day 2022?

Amazon Prime Days were first introduced on July 15, 2015, as Amazon wanted to commemorate 20 years of businesses by honouring Prime members with special discounts and offers. Wondering “when is Amazon Prime Day 2022”? Well, you’re a little late to the party!

The first Amazon Prime Day 2022 event was held from July 12-13 this year while the second Amazon Prime Day 2022 event was held from October 11-12 this year. This is literally the first time two Amazon Prime Days have been held in one year.

Amazon Prime Days typically run back to back on two consecutive weekdays for 48 hours and Amazon Prime Day 2022 was no different.

When is the next Amazon Prime Day?

The next Amazon Prime Day 2023 is estimated to be held on July 11th and 12th. Amazon Prime Day 2022 took place around a similar timeline, although we’re not sure if Amazon will also host Amazon Prime Day 2023 as two separate events this year.

This reasonable date prediction has been made based on last year’s sales and it seems highly likely that Amazon Prime Day 2023 (estimated date) may be held sometime in the second week of July. With that said, we’re still quite a way off from an official announcement as Amazon usually confirms the date a few weeks prior to Amazon Prime Day.

What were some of the best deals on Amazon Prime Day 2022?

Unquestionably, the best Prime Day deals each year are actually on Amazon’s own branded products. So, it’s not surprising to see discounts of up to 55% being offered on the Echo Dot, Fire 7 Tablet, Echo Show, or Kindle Paperwhite, for example.

However, one of the most popular Amazon Prime Day 2022 deals was on the 4th Gen Echo Dot – the budget-friendly smart speaker was available for just $19.99. That actually beats last year’s record by a good $5.

The Fire TV Stick 4K was another crowd favourite from 2021’s Amazon Prime Day and so, unsurprisingly, made a return this year with an even lower price of $89.

If we deviate away from Amazon-branded products, some fantastic deals were on offer from Sony, Bose, Apply, Samsung and SharkNinja. Amazon went as far as to offer a mind-numbing 50% off on these products, bringing mid-top tier products from these manufacturers down to their lowest prices ever. Big savings were to be found across laptops, TVs, vacuum cleaners, headphones, etc. from these big globally renowned brands.

Outside of the big global brands, Amazon also made an impressive effort to boost its marketplace sellers’ sales – over $3b was spent on more than 100m small-to-medium-sized business products across the two days, which happens to be a new Amazon Prime Day record as well.

New Chromebooks, laptops, portable speakers, headphones, clothing and more – all saw big savings as Amazon wanted to ensure everyone benefitted from these major discounts. What’s Black Friday, anyway? Exactly!

What do I have to do to take advantage of Amazon Prime Day 2023?

Now we’re talking!

You must register as an Amazon Prime member in order to take advantage of these deals. It’s $12.99 each month or $119 a year to subscribe, or if you want to be a Smart Alec about it, you could sign up for the free 30-day trial a few days before Amazon Prime Day is announced! However, college students can sign up to a free 6-month student Prime membership trial as soon as Amazon Prime Day 2023 is announced.

Also worth noting is that Amazon offers two discounted types of Prime memberships to ensure that people of all ages get to experience Amazon Prime Days’ unbelievable value, including an expansive selection of insanely discounted products, leading-class customer service, quality digital entertainment, and more.

Recipients of qualifying government assistance programmes, for example, such as Medicaid and EBT, can enjoy all of Amazon Prime Day’s benefits for just $6.99 a month – that’s half the cost of a standard Prime membership!

The discounted Prime membership also offers additional savings options like coupons, exclusive deals and the ability to save on everyday items like diapers – more information about such discounts can be found here.

Prime Student is designed specifically for secondary school student, offering all the benefits of Prime for a discounted rate of only $7.49 a month or $69 annually. Prime Student subscribers also enjoy exclusive perks like a free Grubhub+ Student monthly membership with unlimited delivery, as well as six months of LinkedIn Premium absolutely free, and as much as 10% off hotel stays and flights through StudentUniverse.

If you’re a college student looking to save some money (who isn’t, right?), you should definitely sign up for the 6-month trial.

How to best prepare for the upcoming Amazon Prime Day 2023

Ready to enjoy massive discounts and get the goods delivered straight to your home too? Follow these tips and you’re all set:

Get your Amazon Prime free trial, fast!

As we mentioned earlier in the article, Amazon Prime is available to members only. With that said, if you’ve never subscribed to it before, Amazon lets you take advantage of a free trial which you can activate a few days before the event.

Pro tip: Time your membership trial to run over the two Amazon Prime Days as you don’t want to be caught out of the membership right before the event kicks off. So, as soon as Amazon confirms the Amazon Prime Day 2023 estimated date, you can work back the date to which you should start the trial to make sure you don’t miss out on the opportunity.

Plan what you want to pick up

There will be discounts, lots of them, and on a lot of goodies! But that doesn’t mean you’re going to impulse-buy anything that comes your way just because it’s “flat 50% off”. Always have an idea of what you want to buy on Amazon Prime Day 2023; you can even use Amazon’s Wish List feature to prepare your shopping list.

Just pop on the Amazon website, log into your account and find “Accounts and Lists” on the top-right. Then click “Create a list”. Give it a name and that’s it. If you don’t have anything particular in mind, that’s alright too – after all, a little bit of digital window shopping never hurt anyone. Still, you’d want to do a little bit of price history research on your desired product, just to make sure that the discount is genuine and that you are indeed saving “40% or 50% off”.

Get in there as early as you can

On Amazon Prime Day, it’s always a good idea to check at midnight on the offers that have gone live. If that sounds too extreme, do it first thing early in the morning. While it’s not likely that everything that you want to buy will sell out in a few hours, it’s also possible that the hottest, most ‘unbelievable’ deals may sell out on the first day.

If you see something you like, just get it in your basket to secure it! In case you change your mind, you can always cancel the order later.

Pro tip: Throughout the entire sales window, new Prime Day deals will be released, along with limited-time Lightning Deals which may be worth checking out. In fact, sold-out products often make a comeback by the end of the day or the very next day, so keep checking to make sure you don’t miss out on a big offer.

Use Amazon’s mobile app

Amazon’s very own mobile app is an excellent way to track items you want and set up notifications – the app will send you a notification a good 5 minutes before the deal goes live – this is very useful particularly if you’ve set up a wish list, giving you plenty of time to decide if you want to take advantage of the offer or not.

I’m pumped! When is the next Amazon Prime Day?
